The fifth session of BHIC continues to roll along. The past couple of reheasals we've had to go without either a bass or drums for various reasons. It's been illuminating to see how much good work we've been able to do despite the incomplete rhytmn section. I even got to show off my computer chops by setting up a click track.
This session we've had more music from outside/nonplaying composers than we've had in the past. Allen Myers, Jeff Davis and Stamos Martin have all brought in challenging music. Alot of musicians express interest in writing for the sessions but redact once they learn how quickly they'll need to produce. It's been great to get more musical perspectives and not have to scramble to get enough music. It's also given me a chance to focus on our proposal for next year.
Our residency at City Center Square will end at the end of August but Charlotte Street has given us the oppurtunity to reapply for one more year. If we get the space I'd like to have longer sessions next year so that there are more opportunities for collaborations with artists from different disciplines. Russell is hellbent on a live score for a Christmas "Vampire-Santa" movie which I think sounds fun. If we don't get the space I'm not particulary sure if or in what form BHIC would continue. Either way we've done what we set out to do. It's been fun to see what nothing more than rehearsal space can inspire.
I try to find interesting jazz type things to write about but frankly, jazz is not much fun to follow on the internet. MMA on the other hand...
just remember, I work at UMKC as the IMPACT Studio Manager. I can reserve PAC 521 for blocks for rehearsals. we also have a projector up there already to work with video. I'm not sure how long each rehearsal can run, but since there are so many UMKC students/Alumni in the group, using the space shouldn't be an issue at all.
