How the hell does one write for this?
It's now three weeks out from the beginning of the Spring Composers' Workshop. The group is pretty much set but I'm going to hold out a few more days before making it official. Suffice it to say, it's a big group and I'm excited for the several newbies. New blood is always a good thing.
We're doing several things different this workshop, the most significant being collaborating with Pat Conway's Gamelan Genta Kasturi. We share the same rehearsal space, provided by the Charlotte Street Foundation, so the opportunity to collaborate is too good to pass up. I admit that I'm largely ignorant of Balinese music and am a bit intimidated to write for it. Tonally speaking,it's not in the same temperament, the group is large and the instruments are unfamiliar. Luckily, our first rehearsal will be a Gamelan workshop so Pat can teach us all about it.
A couple of weeks ago Black House Blue Label played our second show as part of the 2012 ArtsKC Awards Luncheon. The show went well and I was happy with how the group played. There are certainly worse ways to spend a late morning than playing music with some hilariously profane bandmates.
I'll have more to report as this next workshop winds up.
I am trying to reach Mary Huntimer regarding Kathryne E Thompson.
Thank you.
