The Black House Collective will be hosting its 19th new music workshop in Irvine, California. This workshop will have an electroacoustic/intermedia focus that will take place in the Experimental Media Performance Lab at UC-Irvine.
The goal of the Black House Workshops is to create a supportive laboratory for musicians to connect and support each while creating new music. Participation in the workshop is completely free and there is no application fee. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging.
Musicians may apply as performing or composing residents. All residents will meet for a three-day intensive on the UC-Irvine campus June 7th-9th. This workshop coincides with the Noon to Midnight festival at the LA Phil and, for those interested, we will be going to the festival on June 6th, the day before the workshop begins
Over the course of 3 days, composers and the workshop ensemble will work together to create and document an evening length multimedia performance. These workshops are very DIY and each composer will compose a new piece and assist everyone else with their tech. We'll have complete access to the facilities of the Lab and will be limited only by what we know how to use. Fixed media, projections, live-processing etc.. should be available. We will be largely self-sufficient and it should be an intense 3 days as we get familiar with the space and experiment with ideas.
Performing residents will be selected to be part of a chamber ensemble. Players are expected to play at a high level and to have prepared the music before the workshop. Previous electroacoustic experience is not necessary. There is a piano available and percussionists must be able to bring their own equipment.
Composing residents will write a new 10-12 minute, electroacoustic/multimedia piece for the entire workshop ensemble (no subsets) and assist with tech and documentation for the entire workshop. The instrumentation of the ensemble will be made available shortly after artist selection. Finished compositions with parts must be provided by March 15th in order to receive feedback, make any necessary revisions and give the performers time to prepare.

Black House’s 18th new music workshop will be part of the 2020 Oh My Ears festival in Phoenix, Arizona. The goal of the Black House workshops is to create a supportive laboratory for musicians to connect and support each other while creating new music. Participation in the workshop is completely free. Lodging will be available but participants are responsible for their own travel. This workshop will give musicians attending the Oh My Ears New Music Festival an opportunity to work together premiering newly composed music in an informal and fun way.
Musicians may apply as performing or composing residents. All residents will meet for a two-day intensive on Friday morning (Feb 21st) through Saturday evening (Feb 22nd). Participation in the workshop will not interfere with performance times in the festival.
Composing residents will write a new 6-9 minute piece for the entire workshop ensemble (no subsets). The instrumentation of the ensemble will be made available shortly after artist selection. Finished compositions with parts must be provided by Friday, January 10th. In order to receive feedback, make any necessary revisions and give the performers time to prepare. There is very little time to put together these pieces, so pieces that require a lot of tech will not do well. The rule of thumb is that if you can’t quickly set up it and tear it down by yourself, you’re better off writing something purely acoustic. Composers must be able to attend the workshop. The BHC has a very DIY ethos and preference will be given to composers who are willing to help and generally be useful beyond simply submitting their scores.
One conducting resident will be chosen to organize and run both rehearsals and the performance. The conductor will need to be very familiar with the music and be able to efficiently prepare the ensemble with time restrictions. The conductor will be free to organize the rehearsals as they see fit and will need to be in contact with the composers before the workshop to prepare.
Performing residents will be selected to be play in the workshop ensemble. Players are expected to play at a high level and to have prepared the music before the workshop.
