Eligibility
Musicians of all different disciplines, styles, and instruments are encouraged to participate. Most participants will be well versed in jazz improvising practices but jazz-specific expertise is not mandatory. Participants will need to be able to read music and should be comfortable improvising. Exceptions can be made; all applicants will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. A laptop musician will not necessarily need to be able to read music; orchestral musicians who do not want to take improvised solos may function as section players. Regardless of style, players will be expected to play at a high level and may need to provide a recording during the selection process. Singers are more than welcome to participate.
Since the workshops will be devoted to producing new music, priority will be given to musicians who compose. Not every participant will be required to write but the ability to provide new work will make your involvement much more attractive.
Participation
Participants are expected to attend rehearsals and perform at a Charlotte Street Foundation Third Friday event at the end of each two-month long session. A weekly time for rehearsals will be worked out among each session's participants. Rehearsals will last about 2 hours. Participants who miss a rehearsal will be expected to provide an appropriate sub. Each session will have 6 to 8 workshops, so if you think you may need to miss more than two, it's best if you wait until another session to participate.
